At least 10 villagers kill? Gunmen loot shops in northeast Nigeria after hours-long raid

Raid in Taraba village

The attack took place in Binnari, in the Karim Lamido area of Taraba state. The gunmen reportedly arrived on motorcycles shortly after Friday’s midday Muslim prayers and carried out a rampage lasting as long as four hours.

Police said the attackers looted shops and set houses ablaze. Officers responding to a distress call found 10 bodies, all with gunshot wounds.

Accounts of the attack

Community leader Malam Abubakar Saifullahi told AFP that the attackers came on about 50 motorcycles, with two men on each. The report did not identify the gunmen. Assistant Superintendent of Police Victor Mshelizah said officers dispersed the attackers. He said neither the police nor the gunmen suffered casualties, citing the difficult terrain and the attackers’ familiarity with it.

People remain missing

Survivor Sa’idu Nuhu said some people were still missing after the raid. The account gave no further details about how many were unaccounted for. Nigeria continues to face attacks by armed groups in several regions, including the northwest, northeast and central parts of the country.
