The Social Network’s Long-Awaited Follow-Up Officially Removed From Almost 2,000 Theaters After Steep Drop

A sharp theater reduction

The Social Reckoning lost 1,987 theaters across North America, leaving it in 619 locations for its third weekend. It had been playing in 2,606 theaters, a reduction of 76.2%.

The movie earned $5 million during its domestic opening weekend. Its take fell 72% in the second frame, reaching approximately $1.4 million.

A whistleblower’s story

Written by Aaron Sorkin, the film is a companion to The Social Network and draws on events involving Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen. It follows Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, and Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter.

The pair undertake a dangerous effort to expose the social network’s closely guarded secrets. The story is framed as a David and Goliath struggle.

Cast and connection

Mikey Madison plays Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White portrays Horwitz and Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg. The cast also includes Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen and Bill Burr.

The original David Fincher film about Facebook’s creation became a modern classic and won Academy Awards. Its follow-up, however, has struggled to draw audiences in its first two weeks.
