At 38, I feel like life is speeding up while my 61-year-old husband wants to slow down

A relationship that moved quickly

The couple met in 2014 and fell in love quickly. They moved in together after a year, became engaged six months later, married a month after that and welcomed their first child a little over a year later.

Before getting engaged, they discussed children and their ideas for the future. She knew his age and understood that growing older together could bring differences, but says experiencing those changes is different from anticipating them.

The demands of family life

They have two young children: an independent 3-year-old and a high-maintenance 8-year-old. She says the daily demands of parenting, including school drop-off and pick-up, can be a lot for anyone and especially challenging for her 61-year-old husband.

She has recently noticed his physical health catching up with his age, though she describes him as being in great shape for 61. She also says she senses his patience with her wavering and wonders whether their different stages of life play a role.

Different pace, shared responsibilities

She says she has a thriving public relations firm and feels she is just getting started, with energy and ambition for what lies ahead. Her husband, meanwhile, takes on many practical responsibilities for the family.

He is the only driver and serves as the family’s chauffeur. He also makes appointments, manages logistics, oversees home renovations and does the grocery shopping. She says she has begun to feel guilty and wonders whether the age gap is unfair to their children.

Talking through the age gap

The woman says their relationship remains loving and open. They discuss their concerns, try to understand each other’s perspective and make room for one another. They aim to do what they can, mentally and physically, for each other, their children and themselves. Although they had talked about the age gap before marriage and parenthood, she says the reality has become more noticeable over time.
