From Orphan X to Treasure Island: 8 Thrilling Action Books Better Than a Movie

A rogue operative in Orphan X

Gregg Hurwitz’s Orphan X follows a former government-trained black-ops assassin who escapes a secret program. He becomes a rogue vigilante, helping people in desperate situations. The book is the first entry in a thriller series that some readers consider to have peaked at its start.

The novel’s appeal lies in its mix of action and character-focused storytelling. Tasks that might pass quickly on screen, such as climbing a building or opening a safe, receive detailed treatment that builds tension. A television adaptation is planned by Makeready and Justin Lin’s Perfect Storm Entertainment.

Treasure Island’s enduring adventure

Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island is a foundational work of pirate and adventure fiction. Young Jim Hawkins discovers a hidden pirate map and joins a voyage in search of buried treasure.

The familiar premise leads to a rugged, gritty adventure, with action praised for its writing. Jim makes for a compelling central character, while Long John Silver stands out as a memorable villain.

Killing Floor starts Reacher’s story

The book was Child’s debut novel as well as Reacher’s first appearance. Its tension and brisk narrative drive lead toward an adrenaline-filled third act. Mystery and procedural elements take precedence over action scenes, broadening its appeal to readers of both genres.

The Terminal List on page and screen

Jack Carr’s The Terminal List begins an ongoing series of the same name and was adapted into a Prime Video television series. The book is described as one of the strongest action-thriller novels of the 2010s. Its revenge-thriller premise also points to a difference between books and screen stories: the source text can create a stronger sense of intimacy.
