Later Episodes Recast Earlier Moments: 7 Miniseries That Get Better With Every Episode

The Patient’s tightening dilemma
Psychotherapist Alan Strauss, played by Steve Carell, thinks he is treating Sam Fortner, played by Domhnall Gleeson. Sam then kidnaps Alan, chains him in a basement and reveals that he is a serial killer seeking help to stop killing. Alan must try to understand his captor while looking for a way to escape.
The story grows more difficult when another captive, Elias, played by Alex Rich, enters the picture. Alan’s concern extends beyond his own survival, while memories of his wife and his troubled relationship with his son add emotional weight. Created by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, the series does not suggest that understanding trauma makes someone safe.
Two investigations in Unbelievable
Eighteen-year-old Marie Adler, played by Kaitlyn Dever, reports being raped. Investigators question her account, and she withdraws the allegation before being charged with making a false report. The series also follows Colorado detectives Karen Duvall, played by Merritt Wever, and Grace Rasmussen, played by Toni Collette, as they investigate assaults with troubling similarities to Marie’s experience.
The two strands gradually connect. Marie faces pressure to give authorities the account they expect, while Karen and Grace listen closely to victims and pursue small clues through careful police work. Photographs, vehicle descriptions and overlooked links become important, even as Marie lives with the consequences of not being believed.
Station Eleven connects survivors
A devastating flu pandemic destroys much of civilization. Young actress Kirsten Raymonde, played by Matilda Lawler, survives the initial collapse with help from Jeevan Chaudhary, played by Himesh Patel. Twenty years later, an adult Kirsten, played by Mackenzie Davis, travels with a theatrical company performing Shakespeare for scattered communities.
Created by Patrick Somerville, the series brings its initially separate stories together. Later episodes revisit Kirsten and Jeevan’s first winter, adding context to their relationship, while the comic book Kirsten carries takes on new significance. In the finale, a performance of Hamlet leads several relationships toward confrontation and reunion.
