After Shooting That Killed 1-Year-Old Kohen Wiley, Mississippi Police Officer Resigns Amid Calls for DOJ Investigation

Resignation follows state review
Senatobia Mayor Greg Graves confirmed Friday that police officer Hunter Foster had resigned. Foster shot into a moving car outside a Walmart in June, killing 1-year-old Kohen Wiley.
The resignation followed an announcement Monday from the Mississippi attorney general’s office that the use of force was justified. The shooting stemmed from officers’ response to an alleged shoplifting incident.
How the shooting unfolded
Police officers and Tate County sheriff’s deputies were already at the Walmart for an unrelated call when they approached a moving car in the parking lot. They yelled for it to stop, but the car continued moving, and Foster opened fire.
Lawyer and family respond
“We are very sad for the loss of life,” Zummach said, while maintaining that Foster had no choice but to fire. Ben Crump, the civil rights attorney representing Wiley’s family, called on the Department of Justice to investigate. Crump said body-camera footage showed how quickly the situation escalated over an alleged shoplifting call.
