A Child’s Death Haunts Mass Effect 3’s 25-Minute Opener 14 Years Later, Still Gaming’s Best Modern Sci-Fi

BioWare’s closure changes the context

BioWare, the studio behind Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, is closing after more than 30 years. The shutdown is part of layoffs at EA, and the news was made official on October 21.

The closure also confirms the cancellation of the announced fifth Mass Effect game. Mass Effect 3, released in 2012, had already brought Commander Shepard’s story to a satisfying close, and its celebrated prologue now carries added poignancy.

A final fight across the galaxy

In Mass Effect 3, Shepard gathers allies to fight the Reapers, ancient organic starships that return every 50,000 years to wipe out life. The discovery of plans for an ancient Prothean weapon prompts alien races to unite and build it.

Shepard travels across the Milky Way to settle conflicts and recruit support for the final battle. Long-running storylines, including the Krogan genophage and the Geth-Quarian conflict, reach resolutions before the confrontation at the Citadel. The ending depends heavily on choices made throughout the trilogy.

Earth becomes a survival mission

The 25-minute opening starts with Shepard waking on Earth and meeting Admiral Anderson, as well as Kaidan Alenko or Ashley Williams, depending on who survived the first game. What begins as a tutorial quickly becomes a fight to escape the Reaper invasion.

Shepard encounters a frightened child amid the chaos, then battles husks, Cannibals and a Harvester before reaching a place where the Normandy can rescue them. Anderson stays behind to help defend Earth; Shepard leaves to find a way to save the galaxy.

A devastating final image

As the Normandy departs, Shepard spots the child aboard an evacuation ship. A Destroyer’s laser strikes the vessel, killing those on board while Shepard watches helplessly. A haunting score accompanies a final view of Earth overwhelmed by the Reapers, followed by the title card. The sequence’s swift collapse of ordinary life and its personal tragedy make the prologue especially harrowing.
