Already on probation, fraternity suspended by University of Arizona after alleged sexual assault at chapter house

Activities halted during case
The suspension prevents Sigma Phi Epsilon from hosting, attending, participating in or sponsoring organizational activities until the case is settled, according to a letter from the university’s associate dean. The chapter did not respond to calls or emails. Sigma Phi Epsilon’s national organization said it had directed Arizona members to comply with any investigation.
Police inquiry and allegations
The student reported the incident to police the next day and underwent a forensic examination at a hospital. Documents included physical descriptions of the accused. The University of Arizona Police Department, which filed the search warrant, said Tuesday that the investigation was ongoing. The letter also alleges members provided alcohol to minors on August 26, the night of the alleged assault, and on September 29.
Prior probation and restrictions
The chapter had previously been placed on probation, with fines, after allegations of hazing in July. Members are barred from contacting the alleged victim or her family, the associate dean’s letter says. Allegations of retaliation or intimidation could prompt another investigation and harsher consequences.
