Michael Fassbender’s Video Game Adaptation Officially Returns to Streaming Ahead of Netflix Reboot

A new streaming home

Assassin’s Creed, the 2016 film directed by Justin Kurzel, will become available on Hulu in November 2026. Its arrival comes ahead of Netflix’s planned adaptation of the video game franchise.

The movie stars Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch, who is captured by the Abstergo Foundation. He learns that he is descended from Aguilar de Nerha, an Assassin Fassbender also portrays, who lived during the Spanish Inquisition.

The franchise’s long conflict

Created by Ubisoft, Assassin’s Creed began in 2007. Its science-fiction story centers on a centuries-long struggle between Assassins defending free will and Templars seeking peace through control. The games visit historical settings including the Crusades, the Islamic Golden Age, the French Revolution, the Viking era and Japan’s Sengoku Period. The series has released 14 mainline games, each featuring a different Assassin.

Reception and box office

The film tells an original story in the world of Ubisoft’s games. Its cast also includes Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling and Michael K. Williams.

Reviews were largely unfavorable, while audience reactions were mixed to negative. Rotten Tomatoes lists an 18% critics’ score and a 42% audience score; despite that reception, the film earned more than $240.7 million worldwide.
