Personal attack on an Independent correspondent turned Trump and Vance’s Oval Office announcement into a frightening rage spiral

A fraud effort takes the stage

Trump gathered Vice President JD Vance, Dr. Mehmet Oz, influencer Nick Shirley and Stephen Miller in the Oval Office for an announcement about fraud. Shirley, 24, was presented with a $10,000 check.

Trump focused his opening remarks on Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, Obamacare and states including California, Minnesota and Maine. He described fraudsters as people secretly stealing American money, and said Vance had described pursuing them as “like shooting fish in a barrel.” Vance told Americans that their tax dollars were being stolen. The announcement of Shirley’s payment followed, though the account did not explain where the money came from.

Accusations grow more personal

The event took a personal turn when Trump called The Independent’s chief Washington correspondent, Andrew Feinberg, a “sick person.” Miller then delivered a forceful speech accusing refugees, illegal immigrants and foreigners of looting the country. Miller claimed that people who came to the United States were buying luxury cars and flying first class while ordinary Americans paid their parking tickets. He also portrayed millions of people as potential murderers intent on pillaging from Americans.

The account characterized Miller’s delivery as wild-eyed and described his speech as an emotional performance. Miller praised Trump for defending the country, saying he was grateful both professionally and as a citizen.

More claims at the briefing

During questions, Trump called for new leadership across Europe, citing immigration problems in France, Spain, Italy and elsewhere. He also complained that other countries would not join him in a war despite U.S. contributions to NATO, and claimed he had “got Greenland anyway.”

Trump said fraud could not be stopped in California because, he asserted, “they want fraud.” Miller alleged that foreign fraud directly funded Democrats and was part of a scheme they had created. Trump also claimed that requesting voter identification in California could lead to jail. He imitated Omar referring to constitutional rights and made claims about Somali voters and unemployment; the account stated that Somalis in America had an 81.6 percent employment rate.
