More than 2,500 detained as riots sweep across country; french government extends curfews

Curfews and arrests expand

Authorities are extending curfews and increasing police deployments in public spaces as the government seeks to restore order after weekend violence. Rioters torched buildings and looted thousands of businesses.

Macron separates protest from violence

In a Sunday address, President Emmanuel Macron distinguished peaceful demonstrations over schools and working conditions from rioters he said had taken over those protests. He said the government would listen to protesters’ concerns and punish those responsible for violence.

Education steps amid budget strain

The government has announced some measures in response to public concerns. On Oct. 8, the Ministry of National Education said it planned to send more than 3,000 substitute teachers to high schools most in need and approved several hundred additional hires.

The government forecasts a deficit of 5.4% of economic output this year and aims to cut it to 5% in 2027. Interest payments are projected to increase by 12 billion euros next year, reaching 91.2 billion euros and further limiting funds for public services.

Polls show political pressure

An Ipsos poll conducted Oct. 7-8 found Macron’s approval rating at 15%. The government also faces mounting debt and a fractured parliament that makes passing a budget difficult.

A September Ipsos poll showed Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally party, with 33% to 35% support in different first-round matchups. Former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who leads La France Insoumise, were among those competing for second place.

Key points

  • More than 2,500 people had been taken into custody by Monday evening.
  • Macron’s approval rating was 15% in an Ipsos poll conducted Oct. 7-8.
