Why Corruption Is Finally Breaking Through to Voters This Time

Polls show growing alarm

Corruption in government ranked first among more than a dozen issues in a Fox News poll. Gallup found 89 percent believed corruption was widespread, a record high, while a Washington Post-ABC News poll found nearly two-thirds thought Trump was using the presidency for personal profit, including a sizable minority of Republicans.

Democrats tie costs to corruption

Democratic candidates are making corruption a central theme in their closing midterm arguments. Party strategists are urging them to connect it with affordability, another major voter concern. Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff has paired criticism of alleged misconduct by people around Trump with claims that pharmaceutical companies and corporate landlords raise prices unfairly. Texas Senate candidate James Talarico has argued that an affordability crisis stems from a corruption crisis, while Kentucky House candidate Zach Dembo has linked corruption to higher family costs.

A broader political argument

Messaging firms have encouraged Democratic candidates nationwide to make the connection, according to reports by the Washington Post and Politico. A Senate Majority PAC memo recommended saying corruption raises costs for everyday items, including groceries, gas, housing and utilities.

Republican strategists have also observed voters connecting corruption and prices in battleground states such as Ohio, CNN reported. Senate Majority PAC spokesperson Lauren French said voters see corruption as an explanation for rising costs and unequal treatment under the rules.

Party priorities ahead

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said corruption would rank among the party’s priorities for 2027, alongside affordability and health care. He said Democrats would seek accountability from those responsible for what he described as unprecedented corruption.

The strategy also reflects a practical political calculation: voters are concerned about both household costs and corruption. Democrats are using the connection to criticize policies they say benefit large businesses while reducing health care, and to raise questions about donors and potential conflicts.
