Career guidance for a changing economy gets a new podcast: bestselling author and economic commentator Kyla Scanlon launches Best of Luck weekly

A podcast about work today

Best of Luck is a weekly video interview show hosted by Kyla Scanlon. Each episode will feature guests ranging from economists and journalists to farmers and comedians, discussing how they built their careers.

Scanlon will relate their experiences to the economy and draw lessons for listeners. The program will also include a mock job interview and an “advice autopsy,” as Scanlon described the format. The trailer is out, and the first episode is set for October 27, followed by weekly Tuesday releases.

Scanlon’s approach to careers

Scanlon said much career advice reflects an economy that has changed. She said the show aims to explore how guests navigated both difficult and fortunate moments, and how people might build their own opportunities.

Scanlon is a New York Times bestselling author and economic commentator. She has contributed to CNN and New York Times Opinion, and coined “vibecession” for the gap between economic data and people’s feelings about the economy.

Vox partnership and production

Vox editor-in-chief and publisher Swati Sharma said Scanlon’s accessible explanations of economics fit the publisher’s explanatory approach. Vox Media podcast business vice president Lillian Xu said the program would examine how careers unfold as the job market changes.

Vox Media will oversee production, sales, marketing and distribution. The show joins Vox podcasts including Today, Explained, The Gray Area and America, Actually, as part of the Vox Media Podcast Network.
