Three Named Among 8 Iconic Thriller Movies, Perfect From Start to Finish

A chase with two sides

In The Fugitive, Dr. Richard Kimble, played by Harrison Ford, is convicted of murdering his wife. He says a one-armed man committed the crime, and escapes after a prisoner transport accident to search for the real killer. U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard, played by Tommy Lee Jones, pursues him.

The film builds its tension around two men with different aims. Gerard’s professional resolve contrasts with Kimble’s intelligence, which helps him evade capture and leads him to assist a seriously ill child. Andrew Davis directed the movie.

An ordinary man pursued

North by Northwest follows advertising executive Roger Thornhill, played by Cary Grant, after foreign spies mistake him for an American intelligence operative named George Kaplan. A kidnapping and staged assassination attempt leave Roger fleeing across the country without special training to handle the danger.

Roger relies on confidence, quick talk and improvisation, including disrupting an auction to draw police attention. Alfred Hitchcock directs the crop-duster sequence, which traps Roger in an exposed landscape. His growing romance with Eve Kendall, played by Eva Marie Saint, adds another complication.

A case without resolution

Zodiac follows the investigation of an unidentified serial killer who terrorized Northern California in the late 1960s and 1970s. Cartoonist Robert Graysmith, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, becomes absorbed in the killer’s coded letters, while reporter Paul Avery, played by Robert Downey Jr., and inspector Dave Toschi, played by Mark Ruffalo, pursue separate investigations.

The account describes the case consuming years and highlights the gap between a persuasive theory and evidence sufficient to prove the truth. It then cuts off mid-discussion, leaving the film’s treatment unfinished.

Key points

  • The text identifies three films, although its headline promises eight.
  • The Fugitive places Kimble’s search for innocence against Gerard’s pursuit.
  • North by Northwest turns Roger Thornhill’s lack of preparation into suspense.
  • Zodiac follows investigators confronting a case that resists resolution.
