Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie Fate Officially Confirmed: What Happens Now?

A project put on hold

Waititi’s Star Wars movie had been in development since its announcement in 2020. Six years later, the filmmaker says it is no longer an active concern and has been paused indefinitely. Speaking to Inverse while promoting Klara and the Sun, Waititi said he and screenwriter Tony McNamara, whose credits include Poor Things, are now working on something else together.

Waititi describes the pause

Waititi said the project would be put “on ice,” making clear he could not offer a more polished or vague explanation. He also described it as “very iced” and said several other films were competing for his attention.

He left open the possibility that the movie could return, comparing the pause to an ice age that might end. His comments do not give a timeline for any revival.

A future remains uncertain

The proposed film was meant to bring humor and adventure reminiscent of George Lucas’ original trilogy back to cinemas. Waititi’s confirmation means that plan is not moving forward for now.
