National Guardsman injured in late-night shooting in Washington, D.C.

Shooting near the Capitol

The shooting happened in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday, according to interim D.C. police chief Jeffrey Carroll. National Guardsmen were inside a van when they saw a fight break out nearby.

Carroll said the suspect allegedly drew a gun. The Guardsmen told the person to put it down, but the suspect allegedly pointed the weapon toward them, and they returned fire.

Both wounded in legs

One Guardsman and the suspect were shot in the leg, Carroll said. Both were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Carroll said early Monday that neither person’s injuries were considered life-threatening.

Earlier attack in 2025

The incident comes more than a year after President Trump sent the National Guard to Washington, D.C., as part of a national crime crackdown. In November 2025, two Guardsmen deployed to the city were shot and killed in an ambush-style attack near the White House.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, was charged with more than a dozen federal counts connected to that attack, including murder of a person assisting a U.S. officer and firing a gun during a violent crime that caused death. Both charges are eligible for the death penalty; Lakanwal has pleaded not guilty.
