Pope expected to leave hospital today after lung cancer surgery, Vatican reports
Discharge planned for Saturday
Doctors described the operation as successful and free of complications. They have not said how large the tumour was or whether it reached nearby lymph nodes, information relevant to his prognosis.
Recovery and hospital Mass
Images released by the Vatican showed Leo celebrating Mass after surgery. He led the service, gave Communion to medical staff and Vatican gendarmes, and delivered a homily, spokesman Matteo Bruni said.
Bruni said Leo thanked hospital workers for caring for patients and for their attention to him. A medical update reported that his recovery continued to improve and that he could carry out ordinary daily activities without assistance.
Sunday appearance expected
Leo is scheduled to make his first public appearance on Sunday, when he will deliver the traditional noon prayer from a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square. The Vatican announced the plan alongside his expected hospital discharge.
