After registering her dog to vote, California woman agrees to fund billboards warning against voting fraud

Dog registered as a voter

The investigation began after a woman contacted the Orange County Registrar of Voters and said she had registered her dog. Yourex also posted about the scheme on social media.

Ballot counted in recall

Prosecutors said a ballot from Maya Jean was successfully counted in the 2021 recall election. The dog’s vote was not counted in the 2022 primary. The case resulted in a plea deal that included a public-service penalty rather than the five felony charges remaining in place.

Billboards warn voters

Yourex agreed to pay $1,500 to fund four billboards in Orange County. The ads feature Maya Jean wearing an “I voted” sticker and use the message “Don’t be a dog,” KTLA reported.

The signs say voting fraud is a crime and urge people who are ineligible not to vote. They also tell residents they can report fraud to the District Attorney’s office. The billboards are up through the November election.
