The real villain? Elizabeth Holmes’ partner Billy Evans takes center stage in new documentary
A partner in the spotlight
William “Billy” Evans is a prominent figure in “You Can See Everything,” an A24 documentary about Holmes. The film follows the couple’s home life in the weeks before her incarceration and presents Evans as a dominant presence.
Their family and timing
Holmes has acknowledged that falling in love and starting a family came at a difficult time. She said she did not want her felony convictions or outsiders’ perceptions to determine how they lived.
Evans’ background and work
Evans grew up near San Diego and is one of three children of Susan and William L. Evans. His grandparents, Anne and William D. Evans, founded Evans Hotels in 1953; the company manages three San Diego-area properties.
He graduated from MIT in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. After reportedly pursuing a healthcare startup aimed at arranging medical care in the United States for wealthy Chinese clients, he worked at LinkedIn and later joined Luminar Technologies, a company focused on radar and sensor technology for autonomous cars. Asked by The New York Times about his work, Evans said, “A lot of different stuff — investing, starting companies.”
How the couple met
Holmes met Evans at a San Francisco house party during the period after Theranos shut down its clinical labs and Wellness Centers in late 2016. They were introduced by a mutual friend; Holmes was 32 and Evans was 25.
They were seen together at Burning Man in 2018, shortly before Theranos fully shut down. Vanity Fair reported that they held a secret wedding ceremony later that year, while the couple told People they had never officially married.
