I've been working at Katz's Deli since I was 7. I hope my kids will join the family business.

Jake Dell, 39, grew up around Katz's Delicatessen in New York City, where his father spent much of the week. Dell says he began working at the soda station when he was about seven.

His connection to the deli extended beyond work: he celebrated childhood birthdays there, and the restaurant closed for his bar mitzvah. Dell officially began carving meat at 21, after working through several stations.

After college, Dell took time before medical school and continued at Katz's. He then weighed whether to pursue another career or join the business, saying he wanted the choice to come from affection rather than obligation.

His father and uncle gradually stepped back before retiring, while Dell took on more responsibility. From 2012 to 2015, he balanced studies with the deli's shift to round-the-clock operations.

Dell remains involved remotely, checking store cameras and responding to messages. He says being present with his family is now a priority, and the headline indicates he hopes his children will join the business.

Key points

  • Dell began working at Katz's around age seven and grew up alongside the family business.
  • He chose to take over after considering medical school and wanting the decision to feel voluntary.
  • Dell still monitors the deli remotely and hopes his children may carry on its tradition.
