From the archives: Eva Marie Saint on why she never

Eva Marie Saint, the actor known for On the Waterfront and North by Northwest, has died at 102, according to NPR and CBC.

Saint made her film debut in On the Waterfront, playing opposite Marlon Brando. The 1954 film earned her an Academy Award for her first movie role.

She later starred opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 thriller North by Northwest. CBC reported that Saint’s husband, director Jeffrey Hayden, encouraged her to take the role.

Before her film career, Saint performed on Broadway and in live television. CBC said she appeared in only seven films during her first decade in Hollywood.
