Fifa: Ex-Spurs player Ramon Vega intends to stand in 2027 presidential election

Ramon Vega, a former Switzerland international who played for Tottenham, Celtic and Watford, says he intends to run for Fifa president in 2027.

Vega retired from football in 2004 and later worked in finance. He previously tried to challenge Gianni Infantino but did not secure the required backing from five member federations to appear on the ballot.

Infantino has said he remains committed to leading Fifa, despite calls from Uefa, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation for him to step aside.

Vega says he believes Fifa’s leadership has weakened trust in the organisation and wants major changes. His announcement sets up another potential challenge to Infantino in the next election.

Key points

  • Vega intends to run for Fifa president in 2027.
  • His earlier bid failed to gain the five federation endorsements needed.
  • He says Fifa needs new leadership and fundamental reform.
