'Potential crime' probe into death of Scots wingsuit flyer dropped

An inquiry into possible criminal involvement in Liam Byrne’s death has been discontinued, according to documents from the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s Office reviewed by BBC Scotland News.

Byrne, an experienced Scottish wingsuit flyer, died during a jump in the Swiss Alps. Wingsuit flying is a form of skydiving using a suit designed to provide lift.

The prosecutor’s report said the first two flyers in the group landed safely. It found no indication that another person’s criminal conduct or an existing equipment fault contributed to the crash.

The report said proceedings should end when there is not enough evidence to suspect a crime, including knowingly endangering someone’s life. No further steps in the investigation were reported.

Key points

  • Swiss prosecutors have ended the inquiry into possible criminal involvement in Byrne’s death.
  • The report found no sign of third-party criminal acts or a pre-existing equipment defect contributing to the crash.
