NBCUniversal is cutting a few hundred global streaming tech employees
NBCUniversal is eliminating several hundred positions within its worldwide streaming technology group. The reduction was confirmed by a company representative after Business Insider learned of the move.
Most affected jobs are at Sky, the company's Europe-based operation. A person familiar with the plans said a smaller number of U.S.-based NBCUniversal staff would also lose roles.
A spokesperson said the company keeps funding its streaming products while adjusting the tech team. The spokesperson said the reorganization is meant to position the business for expansion and improve service to viewers and partners.
The cuts come as Comcast plans to separate NBCUniversal, including streaming and studio operations, from its cable and internet units next summer. NBCUniversal previously cut dozens of jobs in March after shutting down Showmax, its Africa-focused service run with Canal+.
One Peacock technology worker told Business Insider they remain "still happy" at the company despite the reductions. The employee added there is uncertainty about what lies ahead as NBCUniversal gets ready to operate apart from Comcast.
