Action Naruto Movie Works Gain Momentum as Destin Daniel Cretton Will Write and Direct

A project gains momentum

Reports of a live-action Naruto movie first surfaced in 2015, when Lionsgate was negotiating for the franchise’s film rights. Michael Gracey was then reported to be in line to direct.

Little progress was reported for years. The movie is still in development at Lionsgate, and Cretton’s involvement marks a new step for the adaptation.

Cretton joins the film

The Hollywood Reporter says Cretton will write and direct the Naruto adaptation. He co-wrote and directed Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Cretton is also set to produce alongside Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions. Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto has expressed support for Cretton’s appointment.

Casting remains unconfirmed

Recent reports say Charles Melton is in final talks to portray Kakashi Hatake, a prominent character in the series. Kakashi mentors Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke. No official casting information has been announced for the film. The reports about Melton therefore remain unconfirmed, and further details about the adaptation have yet to emerge.
