Why Tesla Renamed Full Self-Driving in Europe
The new name addresses concerns about what the system can do, but drivers still have to supervise it and take control when needed.
The short version
- Tesla changed the European name of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) to Tesla Assisted Driving after German regulators called the former name somewhat misleading. 12
- The system can assist with tasks such as steering, accelerating and braking, but it does not take over the full driving task. Drivers must stay attentive and be ready to intervene. 12
- The name change does not itself show that the feature has received approval for use across Europe; the sources report that regulators were still considering approval. 2
- Tesla continues to use the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) name in the United States, according to the reporting. 1
Why did Tesla change the name in Europe?
German regulators objected that “Full Self-Driving” could give drivers the wrong impression about how much the system can do. The German Federal Ministry of Transport said it was not a system that takes over the entire driving task. Instead, it described the feature as driver assistance that can help with some driving tasks. 1
Tesla has changed the European name to Tesla Assisted Driving, or TAD. The company began using the new wording on its European sales website on Friday, according to WIRED. 2
Can Tesla Assisted Driving drive the car by itself?
No. The new name makes the feature’s role clearer: it assists the driver, rather than replacing one. The system can handle tasks such as steering, accelerating, braking and parking, but drivers are required to remain alert and intervene when needed. 12
That distinction matters because a product name can shape what drivers expect. German officials said the driver must remain attentive at all times. 1
Does the new name mean Europe has approved the system?
No approval is established by the name change itself. The reporting describes Tesla seeking permission to use the system on European public roads, and says European regulators were still working through the approval question. 2
WIRED reported that the European Union was likely to vote on approval by the end of 2026. That was a forecast in the October 9 report, not confirmation that a vote took place or that approval was granted. 2
Is the feature still called Full Self-Driving elsewhere?
Yes, according to CNBC’s October 9 report, Tesla continued to sell the package in the United States as Full Self-Driving (Supervised). The European name change does not, by itself, tell us whether Tesla will change its branding in other markets. 1
What should European drivers take from the change?
The practical point is that drivers remain responsible for watching the road and being ready to take control. The new label does not mean that the feature can safely manage every driving situation on its own. German regulators specifically described it as assistance with certain tasks, not a replacement for the driver. 1
The available reports do not explain whether existing customers will see changes to the feature, its price or its operation. They report a change in branding and an ongoing approval effort, so those details should not be assumed.
What we don't know yet
- Whether and when European regulators will approve the feature for use across the region.
- Whether the name change will affect the system’s functions, availability or price.
- Whether Tesla will use the Assisted Driving name outside Europe.
