Steven Spielberg’s First Western Movie Has a 2027 Filming Window Revealed

Spielberg enters the Western
Spielberg confirmed earlier this year that he has a Western in development. He made the announcement at SXSW, calling the project a new venture for him. The untitled film follows Disclosure Day, Spielberg’s return to science fiction. It will be his first Western movie.
Filming targeted for 2027
Cinematographer Janusz Kamiński is working with Spielberg on the Western. A Hollywood Reporter profile of Kamiński said the production is aiming to shoot in 2027. The timing remains an aim rather than a confirmed filming date. The project is still untitled.
Landscape drawn from memory
Kamiński said his ideas for the movie’s landscape come from his childhood visits to the Sudeten Mountains. He recalled rolling hills, snow and fog, with terrain that brought Montana to mind.
He said filmmakers from different countries can bring distinct aesthetics to American movies. Spielberg has also described the Western as featuring horses and guns, with no stereotypes or tropes.
