With AI rivals raising expectations, Apple is racing to make Siri more agentic

Pressure to speed Siri plans

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that CEO John Ternus is pressing Craig Federighi to accelerate Siri’s development. Apple wants a powerful AI agent that can compete with OpenAI’s Dots and Meta’s Muse.

Federighi has delivered a working version of Siri AI on a very short timeline, Gurman says. The company nevertheless recognizes it is not keeping pace with competitors.

More control over apps

Two substantial Siri improvements are expected in the coming months. One would give Siri detailed control over Apple’s own apps, including rotating and cropping images in Photos and organizing Safari tabs.

Those features are expected to arrive with iOS 27.3. Broader integration with third-party apps is likely to come later, in the spring, according to Gurman.

A shift toward ongoing tasks

Third-party access could let Siri place a Grubhub order or book a dinner reservation through OpenTable. Apple’s longer-term aim is for Siri to pursue tasks that continue beyond a single request.

Gurman says Dots, Muse and Grok can track goals, work out next steps and keep pursuing objectives without repeated prompts. He believes Siri could become more agent-like as early as next year, amid consumer and market demand.
