Top Gun 3’s Next Star Is Unclear as Miles Teller Officially Confirms Potential Return

A major box-office comeback

Top Gun: Maverick arrived 36 years after the original, at a time when cinemas were struggling with low ticket sales and competition from streaming services. Tom Cruise returned as Maverick in the legacy sequel.

Made on a reported $177 million budget, the film grossed $1.45 billion around the world. Its success made it one of the highest-grossing movies ever and reinforced Cruise’s standing in Hollywood.

Joseph Kosinski directed the movie, while Christopher McQuarrie wrote it. McQuarrie is also set to direct Cruise in 2025’s Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.

Third film announced

Paramount announced at CinemaCon earlier this year that a third Top Gun film had been confirmed. The studio is seeking to build on one of its flagship brands.

Cruise is expected to reprise Maverick, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer will reportedly collaborate with McQuarrie on the project. The film is still in early development.

Cast questions remain

Whether Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro and Glen Powell will return has not been established. The three actors joined the franchise in Top Gun: Maverick. Their possible participation is among the questions fans have as development begins. The announcement of Top Gun 3 does not confirm any of their returns.
