Democrats Capture Both Chambers as Rod Dreher Asks Whether the Midterms Kill MAGA

A referendum on Trump

Trump asked voters to view the 2026 midterms as a judgment on his presidency. At a North Carolina rally, he said, “Please pretend I’m on the ballot,” adding that he was effectively on it.

Democrats then scored a landslide, winning both chambers of Congress and carrying Republican strongholds such as South Carolina and Kansas. Republicans now face a debate over what the results mean for the movement Trump built.

Conservatives dispute the causes

Republicans have offered different explanations for the defeats. Vice President JD Vance blamed the war, while commentator Erick Erickson cited corruption, incompetence, tariffs, Russia policy, perceived cruelty and aggressive deportations.

Dreher calls for a break

Rod Dreher, who supported Trump in 2024 and is friends with Vance, says MAGA is over and has failed. He argues that the movement had some worthwhile ideas and that the pre-Trump Republican establishment needed to change, but it did not deliver good government.

Dreher attributes the administration’s problems to Trump’s reliance on instinct rather than expert advice and to appointments based on personal loyalty rather than competence. He points to the wide tariffs announced on April 2, 2025, as a turning point and says the administration moved from crisis to crisis.

The question of what went wrong could influence which parts of Trump’s politics endure and who leads the Republican ticket in 2028. Republicans also face the challenge of moving beyond Trump while he still has two years left in office.
