Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris May Be Being Set Up to Fail in Landman Season 3

A family-run venture takes shape

Tommy launched CTT Oil Exploration and Cattle in Landman’s season 2 finale, planning to explore oil fields Cooper had been considering and possibly branch into ranching. The new business will compete directly with Cami Miller and M-Tex, where Tommy once worked.

He has named family and friends to company roles: his son will be president, his best friend treasurer, and his future daughter-in-law will take on an administrative position that has not been defined. The arrangement could bring much of the cast together at work and make season 3 feel more like an ensemble workplace show.

Tommy faces a broader role

At M-Tex, Tommy served as a link between executives with money and the drillers finding oil. At CTT, he will oversee both daily operations and the company’s larger direction, while relying on his inexperienced son.

The new business could also offer Tommy a chance to get even with Cami. If CTT succeeds and M-Tex falters without him, Tommy might eventually be able to buy his former company at a steep discount.

Funding could bring new risks

Tommy started CTT to escape taking orders from corporate leaders, but Gallino is financing the venture. That means he may still have a powerful backer to answer to.

Tommy’s decision also follows advice from his father, T.L., about facing failure and valuing family. The company may matter to him more as a way to stay close to loved ones than as a source of profit, but a poor outcome could leave him deeply indebted to the cartel.

Key points

  • Tommy’s new company will compete with Cami Miller and M-Tex.
  • His family and friends are joining CTT in leadership and staff roles.
  • Tommy will oversee a wider range of responsibilities than he did at M-Tex.
  • If CTT fails, its financing from Gallino could leave Tommy in debt to the cartel.
