January 19: Netflix Officially Confirms Release Date for Blue Eye Samurai, the Arcane Replacement

A January return for Mizu

Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 arrives January 19, Netflix announced earlier this week. The six episodes continue the story of Mizu, voiced by Maya Erskine, after she sails away from Japan.

Mizu’s search for revenge and answers about her background remains at the center of the season. She is the mixed-race daughter of an unrevealed Japanese woman and a European man.

A new setting brings challenges

The season shifts between Edo-period Japan and 17th-century London, where Mizu faces an unfamiliar society. Creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green describe London as a “dark [...] puritanical society,” where Mizu will confront the restrictions placed on women.

The survivors of Edo’s destruction also face personal and political consequences. Ringo, Princess Akemi, Taigen and Master Eiji are among those left behind, while Jonathan Pryce, Joel Kim Booster and Sherry Cola join the voice cast.

A series built with care

The first season became a four-time Emmy Award winner and earned strong critical praise before Netflix renewed it for a second season. Its production included historical research, detailed recreations, live-action stunt choreography and hybrid 2D-3D animation.

The return follows a wait of more than three years between seasons. The article notes that some Netflix series have seen audience declines between their first and second seasons, but says the time invested in Blue Eye Samurai is evident in its production work.
