HBO Max Top 10 fixture: 148-minute blockbuster officially wins streaming fans for Anya Taylor-Joy

A difficult box office run

Taylor-Joy starred alongside Chris Hemsworth in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the 2024 prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road. The film arrived in theaters with a $168 million budget and grossed $174 million.

The article says the movie needed more than $300 million to break even. Final financial figures were not officially released, but estimates put Warner Bros.’ loss at well over $100 million.

Streaming brings renewed attention

Furiosa has gained a second life on streaming over the past year. It has ranked among HBO Max’s top 10 for most of 2026, continuing to attract viewers to the service. The film’s streaming performance is also helping it earn back some of the money it lost in theaters, according to the report.

Taylor-Joy’s busy year

Taylor-Joy has several high-profile projects in 2026. She is set to star in Dune: Part Three, which is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, the same day as Avengers: Doomsday.

Earlier this year, she reprised Princess Peach in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the first feature film of 2026 to reach $1 billion at the global box office. She also returned to Apple TV in Lucky, after starring in The Gorge with Miles Teller and Sigourney Weaver.

Another Mad Max film uncertain

George Miller confirmed earlier this year that he had written a script for another Mad Max movie. Warner Bros. has passed on distributing it, following Furiosa’s box-office performance.

The project would need a new distributor to move toward production and a theatrical release. The plot and cast have not been announced.
