Psychological depth sets these 8 masterpiece detective shows apart, with fresh takes better than sherlock
Luther’s Troubled Detective
Created by Neil Cross, the psychological crime thriller follows John Luther, a detective known for catching notorious criminals. His work can consume him, bringing violent and obsessive behavior as he confronts personal demons and his adversary, Alice Morgan.
Idris Elba plays Luther, and Ruth Wilson plays Alice. The series earned acclaim during its five-season run for its dark tone, morally grey themes and contemporary take on hard-boiled detective noir.
Mindhunter Profiles Killers
Netflix’s Mindhunter, created by Joe Penhall, dramatizes the founding of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit in the 1970s. Agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, alongside psychologist Wendy Carr, interview imprisoned serial killers and develop profiles to help solve current cases.
Based on a non-fiction book by FBI agent John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, the series draws on real-life crimes. Its interviews include portrayals of Charles Manson, Jerry Brudos and Son of Sam, blending crime investigation with psychological horror and murder mystery.
Elementary Recasts Holmes
Robert Doherty’s Elementary moves Sherlock Holmes from London to New York City and presents him as a recovering addict. Jonny Lee Miller stars as Holmes, with Lucy Liu as Dr. Watson; the pair assist the NYPD with complex cases.
Rather than adapting Doyle’s original cases, the series creates modern crimes and new character histories. Its reworked versions of Watson, Mycroft and Moriarty accompany a procedural format, and Miller’s Holmes has been considered one of television’s best portrayals of the detective.
