16-0 Halftime Lead: Vanderbilt Football Gets a Start Against Mississippi State by Limiting Them to 71 Yards

Defense sets the early tone

Vanderbilt’s defense held Mississippi State to 71 total yards through two quarters and allowed just one third-down conversion. The Commodores forced four consecutive three-and-outs, and cornerback Jordan Matthews intercepted a pass.

Former Vanderbilt quarterback AJ Swann completed seven of 15 passes for 45 yards and threw an interception. The defensive showing helped Vanderbilt build its halftime advantage on the road.

Three scoring drives build lead

Brock Taylor opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a 38-yard field goal. Midway through the second, Vanderbilt finished a 13-play, 87-yard drive with a rushing touchdown by Sedrick Alexander.

Run game shows progress

Vanderbilt totaled 181 yards of offense and held the ball for almost 22 minutes. Freshman quarterback Jared Curtis completed 10 of 14 passes for 102 yards, while the team gained 79 yards on 29 rushing attempts.

The rushing total was a step up from Vanderbilt’s 15 yards against Kentucky two weeks earlier. Coach Clark Lea said the aim was to create an efficient, physical run game, not necessarily to reach 40 carries.

Discipline and streak in focus

Vanderbilt had two penalties for 10 yards through two quarters: an offensive false start and a defensive offsides penalty on a kickoff. The Commodores were 30 minutes from ending a five-game losing streak.
