After midterms blowout, Trump hints at more Cabinet firings but names no one

Trump signals possible Cabinet changes

In an interview with CBS News, Trump said he was considering “maybe a few changes” to his Cabinet after the Republicans’ poor midterm showing. He did not name possible targets, even when correspondent Ross Douthat asked about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who was rumored to be at risk.

Trump announced Friday that chief of staff Susie Wiles was out and Stephen Miller would take her place in the White House. The election losses have left Republicans questioning what comes next and seeking someone to blame.

Officials respond to election fallout

Vice President JD Vance explicitly blamed the war in Iran for the midterm results. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended Trump’s decision to go to war, describing it as a break from the approach of previous presidents.

Speaking in Florida, Rubio said Trump had confronted Iran rather than leaving the issue to a successor. He said Iran threatened the United States and its way of life.

Trump discusses space plans

Trump visited NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Friday with NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. He spoke about his administration’s plans for space travel. Trump said the United States would return astronauts to the moon before his term ends. He also said NASA would launch its first nuclear-powered spacecraft to Mars within two years.

Election charts and oversight pledge

On Saturday morning, Trump posted midterm election charts on Truth Social. One showed that only two presidents’ parties had gained House seats in midterm elections since 1946; another indicated Democratic turnout exceeded Republican turnout.

Rep. Robert Garcia, a California Democrat and ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, said Democrats were ready to investigate Trump and his family. In a post on X Friday, Garcia wrote, “Lawyer up.”
