Rivian Doesn’t Have Dealerships: How to Book a Test Drive

A dealership-free sales model
The California-based automaker has built its presence with vehicles including the R1S and R2, without operating physical dealerships. Instead, Rivian has Spaces in cities such as Chicago, Denver and New York.
Visitors can view the vehicles in person, then place an order online. Test drives are available at many Spaces and Service + Demo Centers.
Requirements before driving
Drivers must be at least 21 and have a valid driver’s license. Proof of vehicle insurance may also be required, depending on the drive’s length and purpose. For passengers younger than eight, drivers must bring and install an appropriate car seat when applicable. All drivers must sign a liability waiver at the location.
Booking and checking in
Customers can use Rivian’s website to select a model, location and appointment time, then submit their contact details. The R1S is one of the models available to drive. At the appointment, a Rivian specialist checks in the visitor and gives a brief walkaround of the chosen vehicle, covering its features and key information.
What the drive involves
A specialist accompanies the driver on a test drive that typically lasts about 30 minutes and uses public roads. The experience is not described as an off-road drive. Some locations offer extended demo drives for as long as 24 hours.
