After Lakers teammate mistakes Austin Reaves for Luka Doncic, he says he’s the wrong white person

A mix-up after the game

Reaves was speaking with Amazon Prime Video’s Allie Clifton after the Lakers beat the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. He had scored 25 points, while Dončić finished with 53. Zaire Williams approached Reaves and shouted “50 BALL!!!!” Reaves turned around, appeared confused and replied, “I’m the wrong white person.”

A strong Lakers start

Los Angeles opened the 2026-2027 season with an 8-2 record, despite losing LeBron James in free agency. Dončić has led the team with an average of 40.1 points per game.

At that pace, Dončić is projected to have one of the five highest-scoring seasons in NBA history. Wilt Chamberlain is the only player to average more than 40 points per game across a full season.

Why Williams may have erred

A towel covering the back of Reaves’ jersey hid his name and number, the account noted. Williams may also have expected the player who scored more than 50 points to be doing the postgame interview.

Head coach J.J. Redick had joked before the season about the Lakers’ number of white players. The account suggested the mix-up may matter little if the team keeps winning and both players continue scoring.

Key points

  • Dončić scored 53 points and Reaves added 25 in the Lakers’ win over Portland.
  • Williams mistook Reaves for the player who had scored more than 50 points.
  • The Lakers began the 2026-2027 season with an 8-2 record.
  • Dončić averaged 40.1 points per game early in the campaign.
