Italy’s Meloni blames Russian hackers for cyberattack targeting minister Tajani

Tajani reports data theft

Tajani announced on Saturday that personal information taken from him had appeared on the Darknet. He said criminals were seeking further details about him and his loved ones.

The foreign minister did not say what information had been shared. He indicated that the activity was ongoing and said he would not be intimidated.

Meloni points to pro-Russian hackers

Meloni said pro-Russian hackers were responsible for the security breach. She described it as a grave concern requiring a determined response. Tajani said the targeting was linked to the Italian government’s position on Ukraine. Italy, like other EU and NATO members, has provided humanitarian and military assistance to the country.

Europe faces suspected attacks

The incident comes as European countries contend with suspected hybrid attacks thought to be orchestrated by the Kremlin. Reported incidents have included drone incursions and sabotage in NATO territories, as well as attacks on food supplies.

Recent threats against media outlets and bomb threats have also affected air travel. The threats have forced flight cancellations and rerouting across the EU.
