Built from Scratch in a Rented Kitchen, Hand-Squeezed Fruit Became a Versatile Mixer in 4,600 Stores

A venture built together

After 15 years in a career that offered little creative space, Johnna Rossbach wanted to build something of her own. Motherhood helped prompt the decision, and she said she wanted her daughters to see that people can change what makes them unhappy.

Rossbach brought marketing and communications experience to Mixly, while co-founder Megan Sather contributed design expertise. They developed fruit-forward mixers made with real ingredients, working through early setbacks as they built the business.

When the juicer failed, they squeezed limes by hand. A broken labeler meant they had to label products themselves. Rossbach said those challenges showed they shared determination and a willingness to solve problems.

Made for more than cocktails

Cocktails were the founders’ starting point, but they wanted the mixers to suit people who were not drinking alcohol as well. Rossbach was pregnant as the company took shape, while interest in sober-curious choices was beginning to emerge.

Mixly’s mixers have always been alcohol-free, Rossbach said. Customers can add spirits or pour them over sparkling water, with flavors built from fruit, acidity, herbs and bitter botanicals. The Bitter Orange Cherry mixer uses gentian root to balance sweetness with bitterness. Rossbach said interest in drinking less goes beyond particular months, and people want flavorful options for everyday meals, gatherings and celebrations.

Customers find new uses

The founders began hearing from customers who were using the mixers in unexpected ways. One customer added a mixer to her children’s water, while others said they used the products in cooking and marinades.

The company has expanded into flavored syrups, dirty soda products and holiday kits. Five syrups launched at 685 Walmart stores, while two holiday kits launched at 1,300 Target stores and online.

Retail growth and wider reach

Mixly expects its dirty soda products to reach nearly 4,000 stores by the end of November. The company says its products are available in approximately 4,600 retail locations nationwide.

For Rossbach, the expansion reflects the original aim: making flavorful drinks people can share, whether they choose alcohol or not. She said the business required time, money and many decisions made without a clear map.
