Why Amazon's basic Kindle proves readers need fewer bells and whistles, TechCrunch finds

The entry-level choice
Amazon’s refreshed Kindle lineup brought design changes and higher prices. The basic 6-inch model, at $169.99 for the ad-free plastic version, remains the most affordable option for new e-reader buyers.
The basic Kindle lacks warm light, a color screen, automatic brightness adjustment and waterproofing. It also cannot use the page-turn cover, and its battery is rated for six weeks, compared with 12 weeks for the Paperwhite and eight for the Colorsoft.
A lighter, slimmer design
The plastic 2026 Kindle weighs 140 grams and is 6.85 millimeters thick, compared with 158 grams and 8 millimeters for the 2024 model. The review found the 18-gram reduction noticeable, particularly when carrying or holding the device for long reading sessions.
The basic model also receives the flush-front screen. Amazon says its touch system accounts for fingers resting along the screen’s outer edge, though pressing elsewhere can still trigger actions such as highlighting or looking up a word.
Faster reading and upgrades
The new basic Kindle feels somewhat quicker than its 2024 predecessor, especially when opening books. Amazon says books open 30% faster. Compared with the 2019 basic Kindle, the 2026 model adds USB-C, 16GB or 32GB of storage and a 300-ppi screen, up from 167 ppi. It is also faster, thinner and lighter, with a battery that lasts weeks longer.
Color and storage options
The $169.99 plastic model comes with 16GB of storage and is available in Ube as well as Graphite. For $189.99, buyers can choose an aluminum-backed version in Seagrass or Alpine Sky, with 32GB of storage.
The aluminum model weighs 162 grams, four grams more than the 2024 Kindle, but retains the slimmer design. The review’s verdict was that the basic Kindle is worth considering for readers willing to forgo premium features and preferring a smaller, lighter device.
