TVLine’s 10 Yellowstone Characters Deserved More Screen Time to Explore Unfinished Stories

Supporting stories left unexplored

Yellowstone’s leading actors include Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, but the series also introduced supporting characters with limited time on screen. Some appearances hinted at histories and conflicts that the story did not fully develop.

The show’s relatively short seasons could not explore everyone. Still, some characters seemed poised for larger roles before their stories were sidelined or ended abruptly.

Mo’s past and loyalties

Mo Brings Plenty plays Mo, a driver, bodyguard and enforcer for Thomas Rainwater, played by Gil Birmingham. The series offers only fragments of Mo’s history, including his account that his mother was murdered and he was left in a car seat for three days before being rescued.

Mo’s quiet dignity and work protecting the Dutton graves point to his connection with the land. The story leaves unanswered how he met Rainwater, what his family knows about his work, and where Mo draws the line when carrying out violent tasks.

Lee’s place in the family

Lee Dutton, played by Dave Annable, dies in the premiere, setting the series’ events in motion. He appears in some flashbacks and visions, but the show reveals little about his ambitions, relationships or personal life.

Lee was positioned as John’s likely successor and was involved in the family cattle operation. The story does not establish whether he supported John’s methods, how he got along with Beth, or whether his death changed the ranch’s daily routine in lasting ways.

Avery’s interrupted storyline

Avery, played by Tanaya Beatty, is also among the characters singled out for more attention. The account describes her as a former stripper whom Rip hired as a ranch hand in Season 1, and says the series initially presented her as an important supporting character before abandoning her storyline. The account ends as it begins to describe Avery’s development, so it does not provide further details about what happened to her character.

Key points

  • Mo’s childhood and personal loyalties receive little exploration.
  • Lee’s death begins the series, but his life remains largely mysterious.
  • Avery’s storyline begins as a significant one, then is abandoned.
  • The selected characters hint at stories beyond the Dutton family’s main plot.
