10 Fantasy Movie Flops That Are Actually Misunderstood Masterpieces

A darker return to Oz

Dorothy Gale, played by Fairuza Balk, is sent to a sanatorium after describing her visit to Oz. A mysterious girl rescues her before electroshock therapy, and Dorothy eventually returns to Oz with a talking chicken named Billina.

She finds the Emerald City conquered by the Nome King, who has removed its emeralds and turned its residents to stone. Though its frightening imagery unsettled many young viewers, the film also features inventive puppetry and claymation, along with a close bond between Dorothy and Jack Pumpkinhead.

Adventure with a gaming spirit

In Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Edgin Darvis and Holga Kilgore escape prison and set out to reunite Edgin with his daughter, Kira. They discover that Forge Fitzwilliam and the Red Wizard Sofina were responsible for their imprisonment.

Edgin and Holga enlist sorcerer Simon Aumar and druid Doric to oppose them. The film blends playful humor with a cast committed to its roles, including Regé-Jean Page as a strongly Lawful Good paladin. It demonstrated that a Dungeons & Dragons film could succeed after the franchise’s poorly received 2000s trilogy.

A baron confronts time

During an Ottoman attack on an unnamed city, a circus troupe performs a play about Baron Munchausen. The real Baron, played by John Neville, interrupts, says the performance is inaccurate and explains that a bet he made with the Sultan caused the war.

He sets out with Sally Salt to find his former companions, while the Angel of Death follows them. Terry Gilliam’s film, the final entry in his Trilogy of Imagination, stands out for elaborate settings and reflections on aging, being forgotten and finding purpose in the time available.
