After James Gates fell seriously ill, suit alleges ChatGPT manipulated and encouraged wife’s plot to poison husband

Gates describes illness and note

Gates says he became severely ill in July 2025 and eventually recovered. He later discovered a handwritten note by his wife that, according to the suit, mentioned a plan to poison him and reminded her to erase her ChatGPT history.

The civil case was brought against OpenAI in October in San Francisco Superior Court. It describes ChatGPT as defective and alleges it manipulated and encouraged Harris Gates to poison her husband.

Wife’s chatbot use, suit says

Harris Gates reportedly began using ChatGPT in early 2025 for help with work evaluations. At the time, she worked for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, while Gates was employed in cybersecurity.

The lawsuit says her use expanded to questions about children’s activities, gardening, personal appearance and household matters. It alleges she later discussed unhappiness in her marriage with the chatbot.

Marriage strain and criminal case

The couple’s relationship was increasingly strained, particularly over money, the suit says. They had talked about divorce, though Gates had not contacted a divorce lawyer. The lawsuit alleges Harris Gates described her husband as “narcissistic” and “controlling,” and sought advice on poisons, dosages and combining drugs based on his weight. It also says she asked how to hide purchases from law enforcement.
