Ramayana Connection to Christopher Nolan’s Epic Explained by Director and Star

Two epics, two bow scenes
Tiwari’s two-part Ramayana adaptation stars Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. It follows a prince through love, exile and conflict with powerful forces. Nolan’s The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, whose journey home follows the Trojan War.
The stories come from different traditions, but both feature a notable bow challenge. In The Odyssey, Odysseus strings his bow and sends an arrow through twelve axe heads as he seeks to reclaim his home from Penelope’s suitors.
Different views on their connection
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, Tiwari said he noticed the parallels and believes Homer may have been influenced by Ramayana. He described the similarities as a tribute from a Western epic and said they might make the Indian story easier for Western audiences to approach.
Kapoor also saw a resemblance, but characterized it as a coincidence. He said he loves both The Odyssey and Christopher Nolan, while stressing that making Ramayana felt different. The article notes that no historical consensus establishes a direct link between Homer’s poem and the Indian epic.
A meaningful moment for Kapoor
In Ramayana, Sita’s father holds a ceremony to determine who can marry her. Rama takes part in a test requiring him to lift Shiva’s bow, which he ultimately breaks to win Sita’s hand.
Kapoor said filming the scene moved him, even though the bow was not as heavy as he pretended. He described feeling a strange current while raising it and called the moment iconic.
The film’s release
Ramayana: Part One is playing in theaters, and a second installment is planned to continue the story. The films adapt the ancient Indian epic as a two-part screen story.
Nolan’s adaptation makes changes to Homer’s original, but the bow scene remains a visible point of comparison between the works. Their shared motif may offer audiences a familiar way into stories with distinct origins.
