Abdy Laments Exits of Female Executives in Hollywood, Calling the Losses Upsetting

An award after Warner Bros.

Abdy received the inaugural Vanguard Award at Thursday night’s Women in Film Honors. The recognition celebrates a leader whose career reflects qualities that advance the industry, and Nancy Meyers was set to present it.

Abdy said she had spent the past month relaxing, spending time with family and taking a breath. Her mother and daughter joined her at the event. She described the honor as humbling and said supporting the next generation was important to her.

A departure amid restructuring

Abdy was ousted as Warner Bros. co-film chief after Paramount Skydance completed its $111 billion acquisition of the studio last month. The award announcement came before her exit.

During her tenure, Abdy oversaw films by female directors including Emerald Fennell, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Meyers. In 2025, films directed by women fell to a seven-year low.

Female leaders leave top roles

The event also addressed the removal of senior female executives amid layoffs and restructuring following Hollywood mergers and acquisitions. Cindy Holland left her position as Paramount’s streaming chief, while Netflix ousted chief content officer Bela Bajaria. Abdy said, “Obviously, it is upsetting to see.” She added that the women’s departures do not define them, pointing instead to their work, what they leave behind and what they may do in the future.

Abdy has no next move yet

Hollywood has speculated about Abdy’s next role, including a possible move with former Warner Bros. co-film chief Mike De Luca to Netflix’s film operation after Dan Lin was fired. Asked about her plans, Abdy said she had no idea what they would do next and called the uncertainty “kind of a nice thing.”
