Square Enix Boss Says Final Fantasy 6 Remake Is Requested, but Not Officially Teased as Next

New games take priority
In an interview with IGN, Yoshinori Kitase discussed what might follow the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. Square Enix plans to focus on new games rather than remakes for the foreseeable future.
That approach may please people waiting for Final Fantasy 17, but it offers less encouragement to fans hoping for remakes of Final Fantasy 9 or Final Fantasy 6. Final Fantasy 7: Revelation is set to arrive in April 2027.
Final Fantasy 6 draws requests
Kitase said he did not have a particular personal preference about remakes, but noted that interest exists within the company. He singled out Final Fantasy 6, the 1994 Super Nintendo game.
“Many people” at the company and among fans have asked for a remake of Final Fantasy 6, Kitase said. His comments point to demand, not an announcement that the project is underway.
A remake remains uncertain
Reports from industry insiders have said a Final Fantasy 9 remake was in development before being abandoned, though it has never been officially confirmed. The project could return, but the article cautions against expecting it soon.
A Final Fantasy 6 remake might be smaller in scope than the Final Fantasy 7 trilogy. One possibility raised is an HD-2D approach, especially after the positive reception to Final Fantasy Resonance, which received a 9/10 review.
