A Year After Mom Died, My 76-Year-Old Stepdad Moved In With Me and My Daughter After Divorce—and We Needed It

Grief and a sudden change

The writer expected to lose her mother, who had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s several years earlier. But her marriage ended suddenly, leaving her grieving and worried about managing a household alone with her 10-year-old daughter.

Don had spent years caring for his wife. After they met in 2004, he helped remodel her house and build raised garden beds. When she moved to memory care, he brought fresh flowers to her room.

An invitation to move in

Concerned that Don might be isolated in his grief, the writer called him often. One night, she wondered whether he might move in with her. Don hesitated, but accepted after she reassured him he would not disrupt her life.

Eight months after his wife died, Don sold her home and moved into the writer’s spare bedroom. He pays rent, easing some of her financial concerns.

A home with shared tasks

Don quickly found projects around the house, including cleaning patio furniture and clearing yard debris. After years when the writer had felt too depressed to plant, flowers returned to the yard.

The writer found that Don did well with a list of tasks. Asking him to trim the landscaping or replace burned-out bulbs helped him feel a sense of ownership and belonging. She has also encouraged him to visit the local senior center and make connections beyond the family.

Companionship and a new rhythm

Don helps the writer’s daughter get to school because the writer leaves early for work. He also walks the family dog, Wally, who has become his close companion. When the daughter is with her father, Don’s company is especially welcome.

The writer and Don share meals and TV shows, and have gone on a jazz walk and out to dinner for their birthdays. Seven months into living together, they say they have found their stride as roommates and plan to keep sharing a home for the foreseeable future.
