Beau Lamarre-Condon trial: prosecution begins cross examination of double murder accused’s account

Account of the confrontation
Lamarre-Condon told the court that Jesse Baird would not have attacked him with a knife if Baird had recognised him. He said Baird believed he was a stranger and was ready to fight. Lamarre-Condon said he identified himself, telling Baird, “It’s Beau, it’s Beau, calm the fuck down.” He also said he wanted to avoid being seen by anyone present so he could leave without being identified.
Decision to contact police
Lamarre-Condon told the court he wanted to do what was right for the families, saying everyone deserved the chance to bury their loved ones. He described a moment when he decided to go to police.
He said a friend asked him to leave her involvement out of his account because her partner could get into trouble due to a criminal record. According to Lamarre-Condon, she planned to say she had gone in the van and waited at the fenceline.
Events at the farm
Lamarre-Condon said he and the friend mixed concrete, moved bags and began putting concrete into them. He said an officer asked his friend to retrieve a pocketknife, which she used to cut a bag in an attempt to get water inside.
He testified that the friend panicked when the water would not go down, and that they spent about an hour and a half at the farm before he agreed to take her home. He described the van as smelling very bad because of the decomposing bodies and the summer heat.
Memory and other details
Lamarre-Condon said he could not remember buying weights for the bodies, although he accepted that he had gone to a retailer and bought the goods. He attributed his blurred recollection to having gone 80 hours without sleep and the panic surrounding events.
