Rookie Fans Missing Season 9 Can Find a Perfect Replacement on Prime Video

Hill joins The Rookie

The Rookie has cast Dulé Hill as Lt. Hughes for its upcoming ninth season. Showrunner Alexi Hawley announced the casting at New York Comic Con in October. Deadline describes Hughes as a veteran Watch Commander trying to manage upheaval in his personal life. The role was previously held by Tim Bradford, who was abducted in the Season 8 cliffhanger, and Wade Grey, now working on an FBI task force.

A procedural with comedy

Hill is known for roles in The West Wing, Suits, Ballers and The Wonder Years (2021), as well as Burton “Gus” Guster on Psych. The series gives viewers a way to see Hill in a procedural while waiting for The Rookie to return.

Why Psych may appeal

Psych combines weekly cases with longer storylines, police work and close-knit colleagues. Its lighter approach contrasts with The Rookie, while retaining familiar procedural elements and a sunny California setting.

The series is also known for pop culture references, recurring catchphrases, Shawn’s nicknames for Gus and a pineapple appearing in every episode. It produced three movies and included a musical episode.
